Sally Takes The Natural Approach To Horse Care

Plum Bum

With a top job in banking, time is precious for Arab producer and trainer Sally Wrigglesworth.

Keen to get the most out of life Sally is busy with her work as Head of Banking and Savings at Nationwide Building Society but combines this with her love for showing and training Arabs.

After 15 years in senior management roles at the Nationwide, Sally thoroughly enjoys the time she spends with the horses whether at home or on the show circuit.

Based in Oxfordshire, she has adopted the natural approach to horse care and is a keen follower of using herbal based supplements and natural parasite control.

Sally currently has two horses to look after the Russian-bred stallion Plumbum, rising 5, who she imported from Holland two years ago and Kasharima who is 13 and who she produces for friends.

Already a big winner on the Arab show circuit it took more than two years of searching for Sally to find Plumbum but she is delighted with his progress and many wins.

"I immediately fell in love with Plum, as he is known at home, and even though he wasn’t for sale when we went to see him I managed to talk the owners into selling him. Over the years I have produced a lot of horses but Plum is very special and has that star quality. Obviously to show at a high level your horses have to look in the best of health and regular parasite control is one of the starting points.

Plum is a National and multiple Champion In Hand and is a multiple champion under saddle, he always catches the judges eye and has that 'look at me' attitude, as he thinks he is a bit of a star.

In 2006, Plum was only lightly shown as he was just four and only recently backed. In just four outings we achieved 2 championships, three firsts and a placing. This year we will be out more or less twice a month at shows with the aim of qualifying for the 'Horse of the Year Show' and then the plan is to base him in Holland so that he can compete at the European in hand shows. Plum is a real crowd pleaser with the most fantastic trot you can’t help but look at him."

Kasharima has had a very successful in hand career being a British National and multiple Champion but this year Sally was asked by her owners to break her and produce her under saddle which is very exciting. "Fingers crossed we hope she will do very well.”

Sally keeps the horses at livery where she has access to good grazing and the use of a ménage for schooling.

“It is only a small livery yard and everyone on the yard follows the natural approach to horse care,” adds Sally.

"The horses go out every day and even though they are show animals I quite like seeing them covered in mud after a good roll in the field."

Explains Sally: “I really enjoy my work, the horses are a great way of relaxing and it is great to compete at top level with the Arabs. I like to keep horses in as natural a way as possible, they are all turned out and I vary their work to keep them fresh and to help prevent them from becoming bored.”

Banking On Verm-X

Plum Bum B

Over the years Sally has used a number of methods to worm her horses but a year and a half ago decided to investigate a more natural way of combating parasites and came across Verm-X the leaders in natural parasite control.

Adds Sally:  “I met Verm-X founder Philip Ghazala at an open day two years ago and it was inspirational to talk to someone who had the same philosophy and values when it came to caring for horses and ponies, and dealing with parasite control.

We started to talk about herbal based products and I decided to give Verm-X a try as I was very intrigued by the natural use of herbs. I have used Verm-X ever since and have been delighted with the results. The horses look really well and they really enjoy the taste, when we give them the Verm-X powder every 10 to 12 weeks they literally lick the bowls clean they love it.

It has been a real breakthrough for one of the horses on the yard that was difficult when we used a syringe for parasite control, and always played up, just being able to put the Verm-X in the feed is so easy.”

When searching for a more natural approach to keeping your horses’ parasite free, Verm-X is the only company in the world who solely focus on natural parasite control in animals.

All animals sustain some level of internal parasite burden, commonly termed worms, which must be controlled.

Launched four years ago, tried and trusted by many horse owners Verm-X provides an excellent alternative to using traditional chemically based methods of internal parasite control.

The herbs included in the Verm-X range have been carefully blended together to work synergistically with each other.

Verm-X powder for horses is a powerful and effective blend of 11 herbs. It provides a 100% herbal formulation specifically designed to repel internal parasites.

Easily added to feed, the Verm-X powder is extremely palatable and is ideal for horses kept on organic farms.

Following success of the powder formulation, Verm-X introduced an easy to use liquid version which can be added to drinking water, as well as in feed.

As Verm-X products are herbal and contain 100% natural ingredients they are kinder on the gut wall than other methods maybe.  Available in easy to use packs, Verm-X is very economical.

Verm-X is recognised for Environmental Best Practice in farming and agriculture by the Government supported Green Apple Awards, for their work and success in bringing a natural product into a traditionally chemical and man-made market.

Horse Powder is available in a single horse pack priced around £9.45 and an economy four horse pack priced around £31.80. Horse Liquid is priced around £14.25 for 250ml, £25.75 for 500ml and £44.50 for 1 litre.

Verm-X was first introduced for horses and subsequently, due to pet owner’s requests, the range also includes specific products for poultry, dogs, cats, goats, sheep, alpacas, rabbits, hamasters, pigs, llamas, racing pigeons and cows.
